Short Bio
Living in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, I am a mostly self-taught artist who grew up on a small farm, surrounded by and connected to nature. From an early age, I loved to draw. For many years, I managed to combine my loves of art and nature by dabbling in fiber arts and music while working in natural resources. I started with watercolor in 2007 and quickly became addicted. Today, I work both plein air and in studio.
Statement
Influenced by her Great Lakes setting, Janel works primarily in watercolor and considers plein air sketchbook work essential to her process. A long-time meditation practitioner, she intends for her art to connect the viewer to an embodied experience of each painting's impression of a moment in nature.
